What Is the Green Tag Program?

The Green Tag Program was established in Iowa in 1965 as a means to increase animal health and performance while strengthening the economic value and financial return of cattle producers. The Iowa specific precondition program calls for feeder calves to be at least 4 months old and adhere to the following:

  • Must be weaned
  • Fed a ration for 30 days
  • Must be held at their origin farm for at least 30 days
  • Meet requirements for castration and dehorning, if necessary
  • Received necessary vaccinations from a veterinarian
  • Have been treated for internal and external parasites

If these requirements are met, the veterinarian will sign the official preconditioning certificate and tag the calf in the upper part of the left ear. A green tag alone does not certify the calf has been weaned or preconditioned. Having both the tag and the certificate acknowledge that the calf went through the Iowa specific precondition by IVMA/ICA standards.
